Billed as an 'ethical eaterie', Iglu Bar & Bistro is now revving up again under new ownership, but its style and dedication to sound sourcing remain unchanged. The ground-floor bar is an easy-going chill-out venue offering organic beers and wines served to the accompaniment of eclectic sounds.
The first-floor bistro is vividly done out, with potted plants, fish tanks and an open-to-view kitchen adding some extra interest to the decor. Organic, wild and local produce are the building blocks for a sharp seasonal menu, with much emphasis on food miles, accreditation and natural rearing (Iglu was a finalist in the RSPCA Business Awards in 2007).
Starters of coddled free-range duck egg with creamed leeks and a potato scone or breast of wood pigeon with black pudding and red cabbage salad could give way to wild boar burgers, roast red mullet with tapenade or crispy organic pork belly in honey and mustard with root vegetable mash. As for desserts, think truffled chocolate torte or apricot and mixed nut mille-feuille.
