Review on Ruan Siam

Sister to the Ruan Thai at 29 Cockburn Street, Ruan Siam occupies the premises that were once home to that Edinburgh Thai stalwart Siam Erawan. It occupies two subterranean cellar rooms with whitewashed walls, secretive alcoves, tropical greenery and skull-threateningly low ceilings in New Town not far from the Royal Circle.

The menu is broad and large, with seafood showing up strongly (perhaps king prawns in a Thai herb paste wrapped in wheat-flour skin or deep-fried sea bass topped with garlic and black pepper sauce). Classic starters such as satays and fishcakes are followed by soups, salads, and a whole host of curries and stir-fries in various guises and permutations.
