Rock stars, Scottish rugby heroes and movie icons have all had their photos taken at this long running Indian restaurant within walking distance of Haymarket BR station. From the outset, the owners eschewed flock wallpaper clichés in favour of tropical timber blinds, wicker chairs and wall hangings. The mood is reassuringly intimate and low-key despite Verandah's celeb status.
The menu covers a lot of familiar North Indian and Bangladeshi territory, with tandooris much in evidence alongside specialities such as chicken chasni massalam (kebabs in a delicate sauce with a touch of mango and pickles) or aloo ghost (lamb and potatoes with garlic and herbs).
Curry house favourites ranging from samosas and pakoras to bhunas and dhansaks also have their say, and thalis are a good way to enjoy a complete meal on one plate. The innovative wine list is several notches above the curry house norm.
