Review on Kenza Restaurant & Lounge
Kenza Restaurant & Lounge, 'full of Eastern promise' just about sums this newcomer in Devonshire Square and younger sister of Levant and Pasha. It occupies a basement site not far from Liverpool Street and has been exuberantly decorated in North African style: 'kenza' is Arabic for 'treasure', hence the unique beaded lamps, hand-painted tiles, carvings and embroidered fabrics that fill the place. It's tailor-made for parties and romantic encounters (despite the high decibel levels) and comes complete with fountains, rose petals, incense and belly dancers.
'Homestyle Lebanese and Moroccan cooking' is the gastronomic promise in all of this, with mezza and fixed-price 'feast' menus as the main attractions. The line up includes plenty of hot and cold morsels from falafel, kibbe and various filled pastries to hummus, Halloumi with figs and bastourma (cured beef), while mains are mostly skewered kebabs and grills plus slow-cooked tagines of various descriptions. Finish with halva or Turkish delight - of course! The extensive wine list includes numerous representatives from Lebanon and North Africa.
