Review on Sri Thai City
Formerly Hokkien Chan, Sri Thai City a contemporary oriental eating house now has a new name, but continues much in the same vein as before. In the basement is a subtly lit bar with a granite counter, hessian wall panels and discreet velvet banquettes. The main dining room puts on a smart face with its blend of Far Eastern and western design features, modern Oriental art, fine fabrics and suspended ceiling panels.
The kitchen delivers a menu with a big wingspan, covering much of the Pan-Asian repertoire from Thailand outwards to China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Japan. Starters encompass everything from Siam fishcakes and satay to sushi rolls, flash-fried oyster omelette and scallops done 'three ways', while mains move quickly beyond Thai curries and stir-fries into the crossover world of black cod with empress pesto and crisp holy basil or roast rump of lamb with Vietnamese mint sauce. Desserts are an equally adventurous amalgam of east and west: pandan crêpe with coconut, vanilla ice cream and 'syrup noir', for example. The global wine list is a good match for the food.
