Review on The Well
Named after the Clerkenwell district in which it is situated, The Well is a highly popular neighbourhood gastro pub with high ceilings, big windows and tables out on the pavement. Inside there's a long bar where you can order snazzy cocktails and elite world beers, as well as a separate dining area for casual meals.
The monthly changing menu (bolstered by daily specials) makes good use of Billingsgate fish for dishes like confit of salmon with shrimp mayonnaise and capers or roast wild halibut with mash, broad beans, shallots and tomato. Otherwise, the kitchen also delivers crispy pork belly with borlotti bean cassoulet, saffron risotto with spring vegetables and Parmesan, and desserts such as cherry and Kirsch parfait with caramel sauce. On Saturdays and Sundays, crowds pack the place for brunch (served 10.30am - 1.00pm).
If you want a private do, book Downstairs at the Well - an exclusive leather-panelled dining room with an aquarium set into its walls. Owner Tom Martin also runs The White Swan, Fetter Lane EC4 and The Gun, Docklands E14.
