Review on Boathouse Restaurant
If you fancy messing about in boats, there are few more delightful spots than the Boathouse Restaurant, a tranquil venue by the banks of the River Stour in the heart of 'Constable Country' at Dedham. Since taking over the Boathouse in 2002, Cameron and Claire Marshall have made the transformation from café to fully-fledged restaurant, although you can still call in for a drink and an ice cream, and they still hire out no fewer than 26 rowing boats from Easter to September.
Cameron's domain is the kitchen and he works to a repertoire of modern dishes that changes with the seasons. You might begin with pressed ham hock terrine, braised winter vegetables, carrot and cumin jam or carpaccio of venison with salsify and beetroot reduction before considering wild boar casserole with porcini and button mushrooms or devilled mackerel fillets with minted tabbouleh and cucumber raita. As a finale, why not go for creamed rice pudding with a confit of toffee apple or Kalhua crème brûlée?
At lunchtime, the kitchen also provides light meals of sandwiches, pasta and interesting salads (crayfish, lime and coriander with Greek yoghurt dressing, for example).
