Review on Jakarta
Dramatic displays of ethnic artefacts, carvings, statues and masks from Bali and other parts of South East Asia create just the right exotic mood in Jakarta, an intimate Colindale restaurant decorated in warm earthy tones.
Specialities from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and even China crop up on the lengthy menu, although ristafel (a famed Indonesian 'rice table' feast involving at least seven different dishes) is the star attraction for those who want to share and commune. Elsewhere, there are fascinating starters ranging from udang goreng tepung (king prawn fritters) to martabak (rice-paper patties with various fillings). Among the main courses look for ayam masak pedas (chicken in fiery green chilli sauce) Malaysian beef daging curry and cumi cumi isi (vegetable-stuffed squid with sweet soy sauce). Salads, rice and noodles are also worth ordering, while desserts are South East Asian standards like coconut pudding.
