Review on Carluccio's
Antonio Carluccio's new Covent Garden flagship venue occupies an imposing 1860s building on Garrick Street that was once an auction house but now houses a café, deli and private dining facilities spread over two floors. Much of the original interior has been preserved, so the place looks very different to Carluccio's bespoke Caffès. There are actually two main eating areas - one for casual daytime visitors, the other more suited to evening dining with an extended wine list.
Expect all the road-tested Carluccio favourites including superb savoury bread 'tins', top-notch olives and other imported artisan ingredients, lots of salads and excellent home-made pasta (try Pugliese penne with courgettes, chilli and deep-fried spinach balls or pappardelle with Carluccio's beloved wild mushrooms). There are also a few bigger dishes such as slow-cooked pork belly with braised Savoy cabbage or fillet of sea bass with tomato salsa, plus regional Italian cheeses, desserts and ice creams to round things off. The wine list is a knowledgeable collection of bottles celebrating the regions of Italy, with almost everything available by the glass.
