Review on J Sheekey
Joseph Sheekey set up his self-named restaurant in 1896, in a back alley just off Charing Cross Road. Since then, the place has become synonymous with seafood, and is now riding on a fashionable high as part of the group that also owns the ultra-fashionable Ivy and Le Caprice.
The interior is a warren of very masculine dark-panelled rooms with sepia prints and old photos, brightened up with a smattering of modern artwork to bring things up-to-date. Likewise, the menu is an inviting mix of old and new. Traditionalists will be delighted by the prospect of jellied eels with Sarsons vinegar, fish pie and eggs Benedict with caviar, but the kitchen is also equally at home with the modern world of grilled squid with chick pea relish, braised huss with creamed polenta and gremolata, or fillet of pollack with langoustine and sea purslane risotto.
Meat dishes are also available and the choice of desserts spans everything from rhubarb pie with clotted cream to double chocolate soufflé. Some big French names are the most alluring choices on the fish-friendly wine list.
A new 30-seater Oyster Bar opened recently opposite the restaurant in St Martin's Court serving oysters, 'fruits de mer' and a small selection of dishes from the Sheekey's main menu.
