Review on Les Deux Salons
Les Deux Salons is a spacious two-floor operation, hence the name, located in a convenient spot for theatreland on William IV Street in Covent Garden. Originally set up by Anthony Demetre and Will Smith, who made their mark with Arbutus in Soho and Wild Honey in Mayfair, the restaurant was sold in December 2014 to Prescott & Conran, who already run Boundary in Shoreditch, Lutyens in Fleet Street, and Albion in Bankside and Shorditch.
The smart and commanding building has an equally impressive interior in the style of a grand Parisian brasserie. The belle epoque décor is the work of Isabelle Chatel de Brancion of Spin Architecture, who together with Terence Conran have brought a breath of life to the venue.
Seasonal ingredients are sourced with care for the menu featuring traditional French fare together with modern European dishes. On offer there might be starters of warmed smoked eel, beetroot tart and horseradish cream or grilled Cornish sardines, capers, lemon, chilli, toasted sourdough and olive oil. Robust mains follow with roast saddle of rabbit, caramelised Jerusalem artichoke purée, braised celery and walnuts or choose bavette of beef and caramelised shallot sauce from the Josper charcoal grill. Classic desserts bring proceedings to a close with Paris Brest with praline cream or a vanilla crème brûlée. There is an innovative wine list with a strong French accent and the vast majority are available by the bottle, carafe or glass. The menu is the same for both salons with the ground floor being the buzzy option and the upstairs a more intimate affair.
