Review on Albert's Table
In an area regarded as a culinary wasteland when it comes to fine dining, Albert's Table at the south end of Croydon shines out like a welcoming beacon of light. The restaurant opened in June 2008 and fast became a well regarded destination for the quality of its dishes. The modern restaurant looks eminently chic, decked out in neutral colours with colourful pictures providing a splash of colour on the walls.
After cutting his teeth in some of London's highly regarded Michelin starred restaurants such as The Square, The Orrery, Zafferano's and La Trompette, this is Head Chef and owner Joby Wells first venture. The menu presents a carefully balanced choice of innovative dishes and refined flavoursome modern classics, strongly tied to the seasonal availability of top quality ingredients. The results are appealing ideas like wild rabbit terrine with truffle mayonnaise, parsley relish, and toasted potato bread or soused Devon mackerel with new potato salad, soft quails egg, and mustard leaves amongst the starters. Main courses take in Romney Marsh lamb with deep fried sweetbreads, cannellini beans, and minted English spring vegetables and as they only use whole lambs the cut and cooking method varies from day to day. Fish is delivered to the restaurant daily and could appear in the form of wild Devon plaice with gratin razor and rock clams, marsh sapphire, potato pancake and vegetable nage. Desserts are pretty assembles such as Summer berry pudding with caramelized banana, whipped cream and sponge fingers or maybe Valrhona orange chocolate, fondant and mousse with vanilla ice cream.
There is a well crafted wine list with offerings by the glass and carafe, together with delicious cocktails as well as a selection of beers and ciders. Front of house is led by Edward Allsopp who ensures that a pleasing relaxed atmosphere prevails.
