Review on The Potting Shed
Situated across the road and some 200 yards from its parent hotel (The Rectory), this re-born boozer aims to keep things true to their roots with great beers on tap and really interesting pub food. As befits its horticultural name, the Potting Shed also runs a community veg patch for anyone who fancies growing their own.
The kitchen naturally makes use of the seasonal pickings as well as produce from the region. What follows is an inventory of pub classics and more inventive ideas, taking in the likes of chicken pie, lamb hotpot and beer-battered hake with triple-cooked chips as well as smoked haddock, gherkin and caper tartine, seared fillet of sea bass with tomato, chilli and prawn linguine, and garden vegetable risotto with poached egg and crispy leeks.
Round things off with bread-and-butter pudding sundae with Baileys ice cream or traditional Wiltshire lardy cake with breakfast tea ice cream. The food is supported by a concise, interesting wine list.
