Review on Joanna's
Opened by John and Christina Ellner in 1978, this Crystal Palace thirty-something started life as an American diner and got its name from John's habit of regularly playing the 'old Joanna'. Today, it is still run by members of the family and its local reputation is based on all-day eating, great breakfasts, brunch (12.00 - 6.00pm Mon-Sat) and a menu that cruises round the globe from England to South East Asia.
Get things under way with - say - smoked haddock and leek tart, chicken satay or Cajun prawns with mango salsa, then move on to fish pie, coq au vin or fillet of salmon with warm potato salad, fine beans and anchovy dressing. Joanna's burgers are a throwback to the old days, and there are cracking roasts on Sundays (12.00 - 7.00pm). For those with a sweet tooth, the kitchen provides nostalgic satisfaction in the shape of treacle tart and rice pudding with raspberry jam.
