Review on The Bay Horse

The Bay Horse pub is set in the pretty village of Hurworth, three miles south of Darlington on the north side of the River Tees. Since opening in 2008 it has received many awards and plaudits, and was the first eatery in Darlington to receive a Michelin Bib Gourmand Award in 2010, which it has retained to date. The smart building dates back to the 1400's and has undergone an extensive refurbishment by owners Marcus Bennett and Jonathan Hall. TV chef Marcus Bennett mans the stoves having previously worked at The Cleveland Tontine, while front of house is adeptly managed by Jonathan who used to run The Black Bull in Yarm.

The dining room is a cosy affair and feels quintessentially British and thoroughly traditional, with furnishings carefully sourced from antique fairs around the country, including a lovely late Victorian dining table measuring over twenty feet in the private dining room. The main bar has a very welcoming atmosphere with a blazing log fire and hand pulled local ales, served in dimpled pint glasses.

The kitchen runs in tandem with the seasons and sources locally wherever possible for its wide-ranging menu featuring large hearty classics, as well as more modern offerings. Wild duck and pistachio terrine with fig chutney, smoked bacon scrambled egg and toasted mushroom and onion brioche is good choice to start, followed by maybe sea bream with shellfish ravioli, deep fried calamari, cauliflower puree, brown shrimp and potato hash with an onion and lemon dressing or rump of lamb with sweet potato puree, lamb sausage, cucumber raita, lime and coriander cous cous. To finish who could resist Eton mess parfait with shortbread and Autumn berry compot or a chocolate and Ameretti torte with Seville orange ice cream.

The thoughtfully chosen wine list brings together some great wines around the globe featuring a collection that offers something for everyone in terms of taste and budget.
