Review on Headlam Hall

A glorious Jacobean mansion set in its own walled gardens, Headlam Hall has been beautifully preserved as a country house hotel, and boasts lovely views of the rolling Teesdale countryside beyond. Inside, many of its historic original features have been retained - although guests also have access to full high-tech facilities.

The restaurant spreads itself over two stately Victorian-style dining rooms with gilt mirrors, paintings and rich green walls; there's also a more modern conservatory area. Food is in the modern British/European mould, with a few classic dishes (smoked haddock tartlet, fillet of beef with champ, truffled baby vegetables and red wine jus) alongside more contemporary ideas. Lemon tea and rosemary-smoked cod is drizzled with olive oil, grilled fillets of turbot and crevettes are served with coriander couscous, and loin of venison comes with parsnip purée, Puy lentils and chocolate jus. Finish off with poached pear and honeycomb ice cream or orange pannacotta.
