Review on The Old Pier

Jacquie O'Connor's much loved guesthouse-cum-restaurant stands right on the tip of the Dingle Peninsula, looking out onto the Atlantic and the Blasket Islands. This is a highly sought-after dining venue with two sittings for dinner (6.30 and 8.15pm) - and guests are expected to arrive on time.

Local seafood is one of the star turns on the menu, which seldom strays far from the comforting world of escalope of salmon with hollandaise, deep-fried fillets of lemon sole and baked stuffed haddock with white wine sauce; in addition, the day's catch may hold a few surprises in the shape of less familiar species like hake and wreckfish.

The kitchen also stays with the classics when it comes to meat: grilled lamb cutlets with redcurrant sauce, beef Stroganoff and roast duckling with Cointreau and orange sauce are typical. To finish, consider lemon cheesecake or rhubarb and apple pie.
