Review on The Gun
There has been a public house on this Docklands site for over 250 years and it's still going strong, The Gun is now part of Tom and Ed Martin's London expanding gastro pub empire, which also includes (among others) The Well, St John Street, EC1 and The White Swan, Fetter Lane, EC4.
Many of the original features have been retained, the floors are oak timbered and there are lots of cosy corners furnished with comfy Chesterfields. The kitchen deals in gastro pub dishes along the lines of smoked pigeon salad with quail's egg, pan-fried sea bass with cauliflower purée and osso buco sauce, sherry trifle and melon parfait with praline and melon salad.
The Gun also boasts a fantastic riverside terrace and an intimate private dining room, which is accessed via a hidden staircase that Admiral Nelson used when visiting Emma Hamilton for their secret assignations in this famous old building.
Tacked onto the pub is A Grelha, a totally alfresco set up specialising in southern Portuguese food, with the focus on handpicked supplies of fish from Billingsgate. Chef Luis Carlos José will be cooking stuff like salt cod croquettes with aïoli, baby squid in garlic and coriander sauce, and lamb espetada. Open: Wed - Sun during the summer (weather permitting).
