Review on The Luttrell Arms, Psalter's Restaurant
Mighty Dunster Castle (ancestral home of the Luttrell family) is visible from the garden of this timber-framed fifteenth-century inn - which was once used as a guest house by the Abbots of Cleeve. These days it is a charming, personally run little hotel with bags of character.
Formal meals are served in the elegant split-level restaurant, where diners can look forward to straightforward dishes often based on Somerset produce - stuffed loin of Exmoor lamb, for example. Other typical offerings might include smoked haddock fishcakes, pigeon and wild mushrooms in pastry with cider jus, and sticky ginger parkin with vanilla-infused pineapple.
Simpler food (anything from sandwiches to venison casserole) and Somerset real ales are available in the unpretentious, high-beamed bar, with the option of eating al fresco when the weather allows.
