Review on Maxim
Maxim is 'the quintessential suburban Chinese extravaganza,' says high-flying restaurateur Alan Yau (of Hakkasan fame). It has been serving the denizens of Ealing for more than 30 years and is known affectionately as 'Mrs Chow's' - in honour of the lady who oversees matters in the kitchen.
The menu is long and wide-ranging, although the Peking section is what really stands out. Peking duck is naturally a star turn, and the choice also extends to intriguing specialities such as shredded jellyfish with 'three delicacies', soft shell crab in peppercorn salt and stir-fried pork with egg and black fungus. Alternatively follow Alan Yau's advice and go for the stir-fried beef with ginger and spring onion, which he reckons is 'still one of the best in London'.
To finish, don't miss the pancakes filled with sweet bean paste. Other plus points include chic décor, pleasantly attentive service and a wine list that is a few notches above the Chinese norm.
