Review on Plantation House Hotel and Restaurant
Built as a rectory during the eighteen century, there is something rather ageless about this cream-painted house on the sunny side of the Erme Valley. It has been a hotel for more than 75 years and is noted for its fine views over South Hams and the Devon countryside.
New owners Richard and Magdalena Hendey have settled in and made some changes to the hotel and its food. Richard is currently manning the stoves with John Raines and their five course dinner menus are built around West Country produce: grilled Ragstone goats' cheese is served with roast red peppers, courgettes, pine nuts and horseradish dressing, while crisp-skinned Creedy Carver duck (reared near Honiton) might be accompanied by orange gravy, rösti, ginger-flavoured carrots and roast beetroot.
Other options could include hot-and-sour Thai sea bass with mango, coriander and coconut salsa, tournedos of South Devon fillet steak with port wine, mustard and garlic jus, plus desserts like strawberry pannacotta with raspberry Cassis compote and tuile biscuits.
