Review on Lascelles Restaurant at The Parsonage Country House Hotel
Built as a parsonage in the early 1840s, this impressive country house stands in six acres of grounds a few miles from York city centre. Inside, much attention focuses on the elegantly furnished Lascelles restaurant and conservatory – a fine setting for capably crafted food in the modern British vein.
The 'Yorkshire Farmer's' menu is – naturally – based around locally sourced ingredients. Among the starters, there might be boudin of Whitby crab with lemon-scented courgette ribbons and pink peppercorn sauce, while main courses could take in medallions of lamb with wild mushrooms, celeriac purée and cep cappuccino or a hotpot of baked cod with pea fricassée and red wine jus. As a finale, guests are encouraged 'to indulge' with – say – Morello cherry clafoutis or traditional rice pudding with Armagnac prunes and liquorice ice cream.
