Review on The Royal Oak
An archetypal Northamptonshire ironstone inn, the 300-year-old Royal Oak at Eydon has been sympathetically improved without sacrificing any of its character or atmosphere. It still boasts leaded windows, an inglenook, flagstone floors and a decent selection of real ales on hand pump.
Food is also high on the agenda these days, especially in the evenings. The kitchen works to an ambitious menu that promises dishes such as maple and sesame-glazed duck breast on parsnip and saffron mash with caramelised pears and rhubarb, grilled fillet of sea bream on seafood risotto, and char-grilled tournedos of beef on root vegetable gratin with port and redcurrant sauce. Desserts are equally ambitious ideas like cappuccino mousse with ginger biscuit or crème brûlée with rum-soaked raisins.
Lunch is a simpler affair that features bloomer sandwiches, fish pie, homemade meatballs with spaghetti and so on. The wine list has a broad selection of interesting choices by the glass.
