Review on Ashdown Park Hotel, Anderida Restaurant
The Anderida Restaurant is situated in the luxurious Ashdown Park Hotel in the heart of the Ashdown Forest. The setting is an absolute joy, a sprawling Victorian mansion standing in 186 acres of grounds complete with secret gardens, woodland trails, streams and ornamental lakes. The house was originally a convent with its own chapel, but it's now run as an elite hotel and fully equipped country club.
Guests and non-residents alike can look forward to stylish food in the Anderida Restaurant, a grand dining room dominated by an ornate ceiling. Note that gentlemen are required to wear formal dress in the evening (the hotel has a stock of jackets and ties should they be required!).
The kitchen shows its worth with a 'house specialities' and contemporary dishes such as poached lobster and freshwater crayfish tortellini with crab beignets and lobster bisque, pan-fried fillet of English beef with snow pea and chorizo creamed potatoes, young leeks and red wine jus, and slow-cooked belly of rare-breed pork with langoustines, roasted pumpkin, air-dried ham, vanilla and apple sauce.
Vegetarians are accommodated, and the choice of desserts might run to bitter chocolate fondant with marshmallow, maple syrup and roasted pecan ice cream. The award-winning, 400-bin wine list leans heavily towards France and includes one of the few remaining bottles of Dom Perignon 1959.
