Review on The Lovat
Located on the southern tip of Loch Ness in the beautiful setting of Fort Augustus, The Lovat is a three-star hotel boasting luxury accommodation and contemporary comfort. The landmark Victorian venue is the heart of the Highlands with a history stretching back to the 1860s. As a multi award-winning hotel, today it's recognised for its eco-conscious approach, whilst being led by a dedicated and passionate team.
In addition to the stunning location and charming Highland hospitality, guests have the choice of two outstanding dining options. A refined experience can be enjoyed in the intimate three AA rosette restaurant, or in the modern atmosphere of the brasserie. Under the guiding hand of Head Chef Sean Kelly, who joined the hotel in March 2011, the menus are characterised by the best in local produce.
Open from Easter to October, the restaurant's menu has a unique selection of experimental twists on traditional dishes that truly enhance the flavour of the finest Scottish produce available. From hand-dived scallops to locally-reared meat as well as chanterelles, wild fruit and herbs foraged by the team, the hotel proudly showcases a diverse and creative five course set menu. A sample menu includes hand-dived scallop with a full Scottish breakfast; venison, haggis, neeps and tatties; and duck egg complimented with bramble and apple.
Guests can also sample a well-balanced, tasty menu in the brasserie throughout the year, with its modern décor and laid-back atmosphere capturing a mood that's bespoke to the Highlands. Diners can enjoy an à la carte menu that adapts to suit seasonally-changing local produce. Sample dishes include steamed Glencoe mussels with garlic and cream, or chicken liver parfait with walnut raisin bread served with apple and tomato chutney for starter; followed by braised Highland ox cheek white haricot beans, Chantenay carrots and grain mustard or smoked haddock lasagne, mixed salad; and for dessert guests can indulge in choices including treacle tart with fruit cake ice cream, as well as hot chocolate fondant with cherries marinated in Kirsch and coconut ice cream.
