Review on Gleno Abbey Hotel, River Room Restaurant
Built as an abbey in 1740, Gleno is now a luxury hotel standing in a 138-acre lakeside estate with a high-ranking golf course. The bright, airy River Room restaurant is a magnificent venue with echoes of days gone by and it provides splendid views of Lough Corrib from tall windows on each of its five exterior walls.
Dinner celebrates the best of Irish produce, in the shape of dishes like tortellini of Blue Bell Falls goats' cheese with a salad of candied beetroot and balsamic onions, char-grilled fillet of McGeough's beef with forest mushroom ravioli and sauce perigeux or pot-roast belly pork with Connemara black pudding, baby cherry apples and Calvados jus. Among the list of desserts, look for the special creation of white chocolate and raspberries.
Gleno Abbey Hotel is also home to the unusual Pullman Restaurant, where visitors can enjoy the novel experience of dining in one of the luxuriously appointed carriages of the Orient Express.
