Review on The Malt House Restaurant
There's been something of a revolution at this well-liked venue fronted by a floral courtyard just off Galway High Street. Gone are the grand designs, lush carpets, tablecloths and dickie-bowed waiters. Instead, the place now has a casual vibe, with a casual, user-friendly menu to match.
The kitchen now focuses on local ingredients and specialist artisan producers, and is developing good relationships with farmers, organic growers and fishermen. Value for money is also a key element, witness the fixed-price 'saver menu' that offers the likes of duck egg and bacon salad followed by salmon with spring greens and sorrel sauce or free-range chicken with chorizo and herb risotto. The summer seafood extravaganza is also worth exploring.
The Malt House wine list ranks as one of the best of its kind in the country, and its enterprising 'wine program' changes each month as new discoveries are made. Choice is by grape variety and there are excellent names across the board.
