Review on The Inn on the Lake
Set in 15 acres of glorious grounds, with lawns sweeping down to the shores of Lake Ullswater, this aptly named hotel is a great favourite with tourists, holidaymakers and families alike. The traditionally appointed restaurant makes the most of its spectacular location, with fine views adding to the sense of occasion.
The food has a contemporary European slant, with a few British influences surfacing in a pressing of roast chicken with veal and sage stuffing, the 'textures' of local beef (including brisket and oxtail) and warm treacle tart for afters.
In between, the kitchen sends out goats' cheese soufflé with pickled walnut dressing, steamed loin of lamb with aubergine caviar and sauce ravigote, and cappuccino crème brûlée with Amaretti biscuits. The hotel also has its own pub, the Ramblers Bar, which is situated in the grounds just a stroll from the main house.
