Review on Lancrigg Vegetarian Country House Hotel
With its secret gardens, delightful woodland walks, unrivalled views and serene location, it's no surprise that Lancrigg was once a meeting place and pastoral bolthole for the Lakeland School of Poets. These days, it's an enchanting country house hotel, run with care and dedication by Robert and Janet Whittington.
Lancrigg is renowned because it's one of the few places of its kind wholly dedicated to vegetarian cuisine. Soft music and candlelight set the mood in the elegant Georgian dining room, where dinner has a colourful, eclectic flavour. A typical four-course menu might kick off with cashew, coriander and sesame rice cakes, before a bowl of Jerusalem artichoke and coconut soup. Main courses might include stir-fried vegetable smoked tofu and almond strudel with udon noodles, chilli and lemongrass sauce, ahead of pineapple, nectarine and ginger crumble.
During the day, you can call in for home-baked focaccia rolls, pizzas or a slice of Westmorland apple pie, while the supporting cast of organic wines, beers, juices and soft drinks does its job admirably at any time.
