Review on 1885 The Restaurant
Set in a converted Victorian cottage on the fringes of Halifax, overlooking the Pennines, this sophisticated – but unassuming – restaurant is genially run by members of the Evans family. It's an impressive and industrious enterprise that also includes an on-site shop selling everything from home-baked bread to cigars and Champagne.
Meals are served in a tastefully decorated dining room, with low ceilings and subdued lights providing an intimate backdrop to the seasonal modern food on offer. There's plenty of ambition at work in the kitchen, witness dishes like roasted king prawns with sautéed watermelon, vanilla and port oil, venison loin accompanied by a cheese and potato terrine, damson chutney and chocolate oil or roast fillet of Angus beef with Montpelier butter, onion compote and beetroot crisp. Recommended pudding wines are posted alongside each dessert: Elysium Black Muscat with rum pannacotta, caramelised baby pears and maple syrup, for example.
