Review on Holdsworth House Hotel
Jayne Mansfield, Cilla Black and Billy Connolly are just three of the famous names who have enjoyed great hospitality in this early seventeenth-century stone mansion. Others, not on the A list, are also quick to applaud its virtues: 'We can't praise it enough,' enthused a couple of Mobile Food Guide users, who added 'the food and staff are fantastic and it won't break the bank.'
The oak-panelled, candelit dining room is as handsome as they come, and it makes an intimate and 'romantic' setting for Gary Saunders' accomplished cooking.
A typical menu might open with poached salmon and Whitby crab rillette with gherkin, caper and tarragon mayonnaise or a crispy pancake of smoked chicken and wild mushrooms, while main courses could range from braised pork shoulder with creamed Savoy cabbage, vegetable ragoût and Parisienne potatoes or grilled suprême of halibut with smoked haddock mash, red onion and caper butter.
To fish there's a fine selection of 'handmade' farmhouses cheeses, along with desserts such as baked egg custard tart (a Yorkshire classic) served with chocolate flake ice cream and coffee bean sauce or rhubarb and ginger crumble with vanilla seed ice cream. Clarets and Aussie wines head the extensive list.
