Review on Finch's Arms
Spectacular views over lawns and gardens towards Rutland Water (Europe's largest man-made lake) are one the major attractions at this gentrified seventeenth-century farmhouse pub/restaurant. Current owners are doing great things here and have succeeded in maintaining the tricky balance between local watering hole and fully-fledged gastro pub.
There's a wonderfully animated atmosphere in the two flag-floored and beamed rooms, which are linked by a wood panelled bar counter dispensing locally brewed real ale as well as a host of wines by the glass. The bar has its own menu that goes way beyond the usual pub clichés: here you might feast on homemade brioche filled with creamed poached egg and Parma ham, lamb confit with crispy pancetta on mash or haddock Parmentier.
The Garden Room restaurant aims for something even more ambitious. Dinner menus might kick off with aubergine caviar gâteau with Parmesan crackling and roasted cashew nut cream before steamed fillet of bream and vegetables with aïoli or roast rack of lamb with fig sauce and roast fig. To finish, there might be pannacotta with glazed kumquats or warm almond tart with praline parfait.
