Review on Saigon Saigon
Members of the Liem Phong family spent many months back in their native Vietnam sourcing ingredients and furnishings before launching the admirable Saigon Saigon Vietnamese restaurant on the Hammersmith/Chiswick border.
The interior evokes the spirit of colonial 1940s Saigon with old photographs of the city, traditional carvings and bamboo partitions; in fine weather the frontage opens out onto the street, and shaded tables offer the prospect of casual al fresco dining.
There are quite a few Gallic influences on the authentic menu, which ranges from rustic noodle soups such as iconic 'pho' to DIY 'steam boats'. Also look for char-grilled marinated quails, banh xeo (light Vietnamese crêpes stuffed with all kinds of goodies), healthy salads such as lotus root with shrimps and sliced pork, and seafood specialities including grilled salted mackerel with lemon grass or steamed sea bass with brown beans, vermicelli and black fungus.
Saigon beer - Vietnam's most popular brew - is unavailable anywhere else in the UK: try a bottle, or dip into the short but incisive wine list. If you're in alcohol-free mode stay with tea or Vietnamese coffee (espresso poured over condensed milk, with ice).
