Review on The Horseshoe
Splendid home-brewed beer is just one of the crowd-pullers at this fashionable Hampstead hostelry. The vats and other paraphernalia are located in the cellar and the resulting McLaughlin's beers are on handpump in the relaxed, spacious bar (alongside other independent names).
Reasonably priced food is served from the adjacent open kitchen, and a great deal of care is taken when it comes to sourcing fresh seasonal ingredients. Visitors sit at odd tables fashioned from old floorboards and enjoy no-frills dishes from a daily-changing menu. Start with a plate of rock oysters, Cornish scallops with black pudding and pea purée or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs before twice-cooked Blythburgh pork belly with baby squid and Jersey Royals, grilled Red Poll ribeye steak or pan-fried plaice with mash and red wine jus. To finish, go for something homespun like peach crumble or chocolate brownie. If beer isn't your tipple, the well-chosen wine list has plenty of good-value possibilities.
