Review on XO
The latest addition to Will Ricker's sexy fusion stable, XO Hampstead occupies the site of the old Belsize Pub and has been given the full glamorous treatment with moody lighting, stark black and white décor broken up by yellow walls and green leather banquettes. It's very sleek, very slinky and knows how to pull the crowds.
True to the Ricker principle, XO's kitchen works to a compendium of pan-Asian grazing dishes based on authentic ingredients (check the food glossary on the back of the menu if you are puzzled by the names). Conventional starters and main courses are replaced by categories like dim sum (jasmine and almond spare ribs), salads (warm chicken and coconut), sushi rolls, curries (lamb rendang with sweet potato) and BBQ/roasts including smoked duck with black vinegar and the now-ubiquitous, Nobu-inspired black cod in sweet miso.
There are also some new ideas gleaned from recent trips to South East Asia ('bursting chicken long bau') plus challenging crossovers such as Peking duck and foie gras dumplings. To conclude, East meets West with an assortment of jazzy desserts ranging from pistachio and orange brandy snaps to iced berries with white chocolate. Cocktails are a hot ticket, and the ultra-modern wine list is peppered with in-vogue names.
Next door is XO to GO - an all-day deli-cum-takeaway offering a full range of dishes from the XO restaurant menu to take home. Pastries, muffins and confectionery are also available to eat in. Open 8.00am - 9.00pm Mon-Sat.
