Review on Pepper Box Inn

It's well worth the trek though the Kent countryside to discover the Pepper Box Inn, a 400-year-old pub some 2 miles off the A20 near Harrietsham. It stands on high ground above the Weald, and there are splendid views all around. Inside it is as cosy as can be with standing timbers, hop-garlanded beams and a log fire blazing in the massive inglenook, plus local Shepherd Neame ales on draught. On fine days, the big garden and hop-covered terrace are big selling points.

Food ranges from soup, sandwiches and steak and kidney pud to more ambitious restaurant-style dishes including calf's liver in sage butter, slow-cooked lamb shank with port and rosemary sauce, and herb-crusted cod with Parmesan mash. Sunday roasts are a regular crowd-puller.

The pub's curious name has nothing to do with culinary condiments, but – apparently – refers to the pepperbox pistol (an early form of revolver with numerous barrels).
