Review on Krimo's Restaurant
It all started for Krimo and Karen Bouabda when they opened a little restaurant in 1985 in the seaside resort of Seaton Carew. It was an instant hit and they soon realised that they need more space to cope with the crowds, so they moved to their current home – an 80-seater dining room overlooking Hartlepool Marina.
They still serve a few 'old favourites' from the early days – grilled marinated salmon with garlic mayonnaise, steak Bellini (with mushroom sauce, peppers and cream), loin of lamb with rosemary and Madeira sauce – and they have continued to maintain North African specialities such as boureks, Algerian lamb and tagines as a popular sideline.
Elsewhere, the kitchen deals in broadly based Mediterranean cooking, which means roasted goats' cheese marinated in rosemary and olive oil served with onion confit, pan-fried fillet of sea bass with char-grilled fennel, dill and lime butter, and penne pasta with prawns, chilli and tomato. A few interlopers such as Thai green chicken curry appear from time to time, and desserts are as traditional as raspberry crème brûlée and sticky toffee pudding. Two-course lunches and midweek 'early bird' menus are outstanding value.
