Review on Argent D'Or at Close House
Argent D'Or is the fine dining restaurant at Close House Hotel, a beautifully renovated 18th century mansion set in Heddon on the Wall amidst the stunning Northumberland countryside. The restaurant is a lavishly appointed room on a grand scale with chandeliers, huge mirrors and sparkling chandeliers, decked out in a palette of gold and silver as befitting its name, with panoramic views across the Tyne Valley and Filly Golf Course.
The kitchen is under the leadership of Head Chef Simon Walsh who has gained considerable culinary expertise working at such establishments as The Barrasford Arms, The Lakeside Hotel, The Morritt Arms, Bistro 21 and Slaley Hall. Locally sourced produce is used to telling effect and just about everything comes from within a 30 mile radius of the restaurant.
Typical starters on the menu are hot smoked mackerel pate with English cucumber salad or maybe grilled wood pigeon with ricotta, peas and mint. Main courses usher in slow cooked pork belly, spiced apple puree, pan haggerty, braised kale and bacon with cider jus or roast North Sea cod, parmentier potatoes, wild leeks, crispy oyster and rouille. Bringing up the rear are desserts such as almond blackberry and gin bakewell with clotted cream ice cream or baked custard tart with rhubarb paired with Granny Smith apple sorbet.
Close House boasts two 18-hole golf courses, a state-of-the-art driving range, a golf academy and Lee Westwood is the attached Tour Pro.
