Review on The George Hotel
Charmingly situated where the old Roman road crosses the River Tyne, this delightful hotel dates back to the seventeenth century and has its own terraced and landscaped gardens (complete with a giant chess board) running down to the water's edge. It makes a peaceful country retreat, although it is fully equipped for today's needs, including a leisure club, spa and gym.
Leisurely evening meals are served in the Riverside Restaurant where large picture windows make the most of the view. Menus are based around local and regional produce, which is subjected to modern treatment for the likes of chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade, braised lamb shank with root vegetables and hot raspberry and white chocolate soufflé. Light lunches are served in the cocktail bar.
