Review on Homewood Park
Homewood Park started life as a private residence, but for the last 25 years it has developed a reputation as one of the loveliest country house hotels in the West Country. The mansion itself (Georgian with Victorian additions) certainly creates a memorable first impression with its romantic looks, verdant setting and 10 acres of fabulous prizewinning gardens overlooking the Limpley Stoke valley south of Bath.
There are several dining rooms, each with fine views of the gardens, and visitors can look forward to meticulously crafted modern food inspired by abundant supplies of British produce. To start, the kitchen might offer octopus carpaccio, tempura mussels, saffron, red pepper or foie gras, chargrilled peach, brioche, ice wine vinegar ahead of veal, rump, pomme puree, peas, broad beans, lettuce and bacon, or from the sea there's hake, broccoli, almond and summer truffle.
Bringing up the rear are cleverly fashioned desserts such as Bath ale cake, banana, malt and chocolate or nougat parfait, elderflower and strawberry consomme; otherwise try the selection of British and European cheeses. The serious wine list is unashamedly biased towards France, although the New World is also strongly represented.
