Review on Hason Raja
Named after a celebrated Bangladeshi mystical poet and playboy, Hason Raja on Southampton Row is a forward-looking restaurant done out in soothing modern style with suede Italian furniture, elegant glass wall partitions, exotic floral arrangements and - of course - the odd picture of the man himself.
Dishes can be tailored and tempered to suit all palates, and heat levels are clearly flagged up on the wide-ranging menu, which mixes biryanis, rogan josh and tandooris with more distinctive regional dishes and contemporary crossovers. Among the more unusual specialities are anari chaamp (tawa-grilled lamb in a star anise and pomegranate sauce), French goose cooked in a sauce of aniseed, poppy seeds and blueberries, and dumka lobster steamed with mace, cumin and saffron. Private functions - complete with Indian music and dancers - are a big attraction.
