Review on The Spiced Pear
Chef and restaurateur Tim Bilton who ran the acclaimed Butchers Arms in Hepworth for five years, has opened up a new venture on the site of the Congrats and Hepwrorth restaurant, which he has renamed The Spiced Pear. Set about a mile outside the picturesque small village of Holmfirth in the heart of the beautiful Holme Valley, it is famous for its location for the popular BBC TV series Last of the Summer Wine. The old country inn has undergone a refurbishment programme and has been converted into a smart dining room overlooked by an open kitchen, a vintage tea room with a terrace taking in the views of the hills of the south Pennines and plans for boutique bedrooms are in the pipeline.
The kitchen runs in tandem with the seasons and there's a real dedication to sourcing first-class local produce. Choosing from the à la carte menu you could start with their signature Spiced pear seasonal soup served with fresh baked bread or maybe the sticky pig's cheeks with pak choi, ginger, chilli and purple sprouting broccoli. When it comes to main courses there's pan seared 'Round Green Farm' venison haunch steak, venison cottage pie with Summer garden vegetables and Pontefract liquorice or roast fillet of North Sea cod paired with Borlotti beans, chorizo and cabbage broth. Desserts are deliciously indulgent creations witness, Plate of Chocolate, rich Verona chocolate tart, velvet chocolate marquise, white chocolate crème brulee, chocolate popping candy, hazelnut praline ice cream, macadamia and roasted or the trio of pears, consisting of warm pear crumble and custard, pear and almond tart and spicy pear ice cream.
The Spiced Pear was crowned as the Readers restaurant of the year for the North East by Waitrose Good Food Guide 2015.
Tim has unfortunately had to take a step back from the business to concentrate on his recovery from a reoccurring illness. The Spiced Pear will for the time being focus on their lovely vintage tea room, with his wife Adele taking the helm. During this period the tasting and a la carte menus will not be available. Our good wishes go to Tim and his family during this difficult time.
