Review on Mulberry Restaurant, Langshott Manor
A glorious example of Elizabethan splendour and pretty as the proverbial picture, Langshott Manor at Horley is an eye-catching timber-framed house dating from around 1580. Today it is famed for its spectacular, award-winning gardens – three acres of horticultural artistry with wisteria, roses, sculptured topiary, vast herbaceous borders and areas of woodland all playing their part.
Formal meals are served in the discreetly elegant surroundings of the Mulberry Restaurant, which has leaded windows overlooking the grounds. The kitchen makes good use of home-grown and carefully sourced produce for an inventive modern repertoire that seems fond of fish/meat combos – as in roast cod cheek with carpaccio of belly pork and Bramley apple or roast monkfish with braised oxtail and truffle emulsion.
There are also occasional exotic flourishes (pigeon with hickory-smoked coconut, baby artichokes and pineapple jelly, for example) and the creativity works its way through to desserts like lemon curd with barley ice cream, raspberry syrup and basil meringue. Langshott Manor also boasts an extensive, world-class wine list of more than 140 bins.
If you are looking for something less formal, St Peter's Brasserie might do the trick. It has its own private terrace and serves everything from sandwiches to three-course meals right through the day.
