Built in 1841 as part of Sir Henry Worsley's doomed scheme to turn Hovingham into a thriving spa town, this family-run hotel overlooking the village green now caters for travellers and tourists exploring the moors and historic sights of North Yorkshire.
The main restaurant serves formal evening meals and Sunday lunch in a rich setting of red and green colour schemes, floral drapes and tartan-backed chairs. Menus change every few weeks, but dinner might commence with pressed ham hock and duck terrine, ahead of poached salmon and monkfish with crushed new potatoes and chive cream or pan-roast belly pork with 'hotpot' potatoes and cider jus. To finish, try chocolate marquise or sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce.
Light lunches and suppers are also available in the themed Cricketers' Bar & Bistro (expect dishes such as goats' cheese and red onion tart, calf's liver with champ and wild mushroom risotto, plus sandwiches).
