Review on Kilmichael Country House Hotel
Reputedly the oldest private house on the Isle of Arran, Kilmichael is set in historic grounds granted to its forebears by Robert the Bruce in 1307. These days it is an auspicious country hotel, where guests can enjoy 'sybaritic comfort' and fine food.
Meals are served in the intimate, Georgian-style dining room with its red walls and interesting knick-knacks. The short, four-course dinner menu changes each day and is peppered with Scottish ingredients. To begin, you might choose between smoked salmon and prawn cheesecake with a herb and flower salad or roasted chestnut and garlic soup served with red pepper compote. Next comes a sorbet, before adventurous main courses - baked rack of lamb with a Persian sauce of walnuts and pomegranates, for example.
Proceedings conclude with a choice of desserts like homemade damson gin fool with orange and hazelnut shortbread 'stars'; otherwise go for Mr McChlery's 'excellent cheeses' served with Arran oatcakes.
