Review on The Cameron Restaurant, Bourne Hall Country House Hotel
Built in the 1860s for one of Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting, Bourne Hall occupies a lovely spot outside Shanklin Old Village, at the foot of the Luscombe Downs. It also boasts three acres of gardens overlooking Sandown Bay.
The elegant Cameron Restaurant, named after the famous Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, who lived on the island in the 1860's makes the most of the location, with delightful views from its big windows. It makes a pleasing backdrop for food with a broad international bias. Set menus are the order of the day and the kitchen offers four-course deals that generally open with a soup (tomato and brandy, for example) and conclude with old-fashioned sweets like poached pears in red wine or white chocolate profiteroles. In between, expect dishes like roast rack of lamb on crushed sweet potatoes with redcurrant and rosemary jus or medallions of pork with mustard cream sauce. Note that the restaurant doesn't accept youngsters under 16.
