Review on Spero's

A converted boat shed on Porthmellon beach, overlooking St Mary's harbour, is the dream location for this animated bistro/restaurant called Spero's, named after an international 8 metre class racing boat. The original building has been cleverly converted into a split-level venue with hardwood floors, groovy lighting and a decked area outside: catch the amazing summer sunsets or take in the glorious views of Samson, Bryher and Tresco.

During the day, the place functions as a casual laid-back café, serving tapas, grills and seafood specials from a buzzy open-to-view kitchen. 'Shorts, shades and sun tan cream are a must,' say the owners. At night, the place becomes a little more discerning ('shoes are preferable') and the menu moves up a few notches for sunny Mediterranean-style dishes like warm chorizo with red onions and new potatoes, grilled tuna niçoise with green chilli pesto, and chicken breast wrapped in Parma ham with sun-dried tomatoes and Ricotta. Scillonian crabs and lobsters are always available from the restaurant's own tank, and there are comforting desserts to round things off.
