Review on Akari
Formerly an Islington boozer, Akari is north London's answer to a genuine Japanese 'izakaya'. There are reminders of the past in the big windows, high ceilings and long bar, but the Japanese influence comes into play with floral arrangements, old posters advertising Asahi and Kirin beer, and shelves of saké bottles. It's cool, authentic, chatty and immensely likeable.
The kitchen focuses on char-grilled skewers of yakitori, assorted gyoza dumplings, tempura and bowls of udon noodles, along with specials including stewed belly of pork, tuna tataki and salmon sashimi. In addition to beer, there are sakés aplenty, umeshu (plum wine) and a short list of mostly French and Spanish tipples. Note that Akari is open right through the day if you simply want to drink and chat.
