Review on Vintage Salt

Des McDonald, a former Ivy head chef and ex-chief executive of the Caprice Group, launched his first solo restaurant on bustling Upper Street in Islington, initially called The Fish & Chip Shop, it changed it's named to Vintage Salt in July 2015. Featuring a quaint exterior with a candy stripe awning, the interiors have been created by Box 9 Design paying homage to the traditional British café. Colourful prints are displayed on the wall and duck egg blue panelling contrasts with tan leather booths, with additional seating on high pale green stools in front of the fishmongers table and hot and cold bars. Diners can watch all the action of the kitchen through a glass panel designed to replicate a vintage fish and chip shop window.

Billed as a 'posh' fish and chip shop, fish arrives daily from Brixham with the kitchen only serving sustainable fresh fish approved by the Marine Conservation Society. In keeping with the nostalgic style of the restaurant, menus are printed on retro brown paper and 50's ska music plays in the background. Typical starters include smoked mackerel, horseradish and potato or Isle of Man crab on toast and avocado. Main courses offer roasted cod, woodland mushrooms and bacon or fish pie and cheesy crust, or for a trip down memory lane there's butties in the shape of fish finger and pea purée. Carnivores have the option of "Chip Shop" chicken Caesar as a starter followed by a main course of roast chicken and sweet root vegetables. To finish enjoy a rhubarb knickerbocker glory or a salted walnut and apple crumble.

Backing up the food is a concise wine list, zingy cocktails, local Camden beers and award winning cider from Somerset.
