Review on The Gate Islington
Islington sees the opening of a second branch of the Daniels brothers successful Gate vegetarian restaurant, which has been the recipient of numerous awards since its inception in December 1989. The smart building with its white frontage is a short stroll from the Sadler's Wells Theatre. The windows provide a light and airy interior with a split level room that curves around the bar, and a lounge area with comfy sofas towards the back of the restaurant.
The kitchen sends out a wide range of culinary delights using different components, contrasting tastes and high visual impact. High quality ingredients are carefully sourced for their dishes and much of the produce is organic. Leek and trompette tart, pan-fried leeks baked with crème fraiche in parmesan pastry and topped with trompette is a typical starter ahead of cous-cous crusted aubergine, char-grilled aubergine filled with a cream cheese, shallot, almond, pickled lemon, chilli and coriander, coated with chermoule cous-cous, served with a chickpea and beetroot salsa and red and green schoog. To finish there are desserts such as apple rhubarb and ginger crumble served with crème anglaise or maybe a lavender brûlée. The food is complemented by a excellent selection of organic, vegan, biodynamic and natural wines from around the globe.
